We're coming home to the garden, and we'd love you to come with us. New seedlings in about a year. Join the Takara family list

About us

We're a family in beautiful Northern California who fell in love with Trichocereus, and with the people who grow them.

Takara Cactus has always been about more than plants. It's about sharing the Tricho lifestyle with growers who feel like family. Here's how we got here, and where we're going next.

Our story, and yours

  1. Where it started

Takara Cactus started the way the best things do: as a family hobby in our Northern California garden. Growing cacti slowly turned into a way of life, and a passion we shared with each other.

  2. Sharing the Tricho lifestyle

We opened Takara Cactus to share that passion, and you welcomed it with open arms. Over several years we became one of the premier suppliers of Trichocereus seedlings in the United States, packing every order by hand and shipping every Monday. Somewhere along the way, our customers stopped feeling like customers. You became family.

  3. Stepping back

Eventually we made the hard decision to close the store so we could focus on our careers and our relationships. It wasn't easy to step away from something we loved, but it was the right choice for our family.

  4. Coming home

The garden never stopped being our happy place, and we never stopped thinking about the people we grew for. Now we're ready to come back. The first new Takara seedlings are about a year away, and we'd love for you to be part of it from the very first seed.

The Cacti

The genus name Trichocereus was coined by Vincenzo Riccobono in 1909 to describe a selection of cacti native to South America that grow as columns. In 1974 the genus was folded into the broader Echinopsis by Heimo Friedrich, but within the cactus community Trichocereus is still recognized as a distinct group, and the broader Echinopsis definition has never been fully accepted for these plants. — Wikipedia

These plants can be grown from seed, or propagated from cuttings, which produce a genetic clone of the parent plant.

For the relaunch, we're once again sourcing seed for new and up-and-coming hybrids, alongside some of the favorites you loved. Our seed comes from both domestic and imported sources.
